The new 7.5km M4 and M8 motorway link – one of the components of Australia’s largest road infrastructure project, WestConnex – finishes ahead of schedule.
The 7.5-kilometre mega tunnels provide a critical new link between the M4 at Haberfield and the M8 at St Peters, which opened at 3 am on Friday 20 January.
“The Australian Government is committed to a partnership which delivers vital infrastructure for our states and territories, including NSW, to enhance the liveability of cities like Sydney, and support the strength of its economy,” says Federal Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government Minister Catherine King.
“These tunnels have been constructed using more sustainable materials and energy-efficient technology, requiring less long-term maintenance,” says Federal Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government Minister Catherine King.
“The project has also achieved key sustainability ratings, with around 8.7 million tonnes of spoil beneficially reused, including at the future Western Sydney International Airport site,” says Federal Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government Minister Catherine King.
“More than 18 hectares of green space is also being delivered as part of the WestConnex project, along with 23 kilometres of new and improved cycleways and walkways,” says Federal Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government Minister Catherine King.
The Westconnex project is Australia’s largest road infrastructure project and plays a critical part in bringing Sydney forward. Once the third major component completes in 2023, WestConnex will provide a 33km traffic-free motorway network, linking the north shore, Sydney Airport, and southern suburbs.
“Our strong, long-term economic plan has delivered a road project that will completely transform Western Sydney, helping people get home sooner and safer,” says NSW Premier Dominic Perrottet.
“This vital new link will save motorists up to 40 minutes on their journey between Western Sydney and Sydney Airport, bypassing 52 sets of traffic lights by travelling through 22 kilometres of tunnels deep under the city,” says NSW Premier Dominic Perrottet.
“We are completely transforming the way Sydneysiders live, work and commute across their city, with over a quarter of a million motorists already using WestConnex daily,” says NSW Premier Dominic Perrottet.
The M4 and M8 link is the third stage of the $16.8 billion WestConnex project being delivered in a partnership between the NSW Government and the Commonwealth, which has contributed a $1.5 billion grant and a $2 billion concessional loan.
“More than 12,000 people have been involved in building the project with around 40 per cent of workers from Western Sydney and 21 percent female, which is well above the national industry average,” says NSW Minister for Metropolitan Roads Natalie Ward.
“This marks a major milestone for the city-shaping Westconnex project, which is on track to be completed this year when the Rozelle interchange comes online, says NSW Minister for Metropolitan Roads Natalie Ward.
“The NSW Government plans don’t stop here, and we are already working to link in the future Western Harbour Tunnel and Sydney Gateway in a win for everyone from tradies to tourists,” says NSW Minister for Metropolitan Roads Natalie Ward.
The final stage of WestConnex will be complete once the Rozelle Interchange opens in late 2023.
