What is Gold Coast Light Rail?

Gold Coast Light Rail is Queensland’s first light rail network and the largest public transport project undertaken on the Gold Coast to date.

The project will help to minimize road congestion and maintain the city’s great lifestyle. With 12 million tourists visiting the city every year, the tram network is proving transformative.

How is the Project being delivered?

The project is delivered in stages.

Stage 1 – Gold Coast University Hospital to Broadbeach was delivered as a public-private partnership between the Queensland Government, the City, the Australian Government and GoldLinQ, with the City providing a financial contribution of $120 million.  It has been operational since July 2014;

GoldLinQ consortium for Stage 1 comprised:

– KDR2 Gold Coast Pty Ltd;
– Bombardier Transportation Australia Pty Ltd;
– McConnell Dowell Constructors (Aust.) Pty Ltd ; and
– Plenary Group Pty Ltd.

Stage 2 – Helensvale to Gold Coast University Hospital has been delivered and is operational since December 2017;

CPB Contractors were awarded the design and construct contract for Stage 2, which was completed in December 2017, in time for the 2018 Commonwealth Games.

Stage 3 – Broadbeach to Coolangatta – awaiting funding

More about Gold Coast Light Rail Stage 3A

Stage 3 of the Project is proposed to extend the light rail line from Broadbeach to Burleigh Heads and then to the Gold Coast Airport and Coolangatta.

Stage 3A will expand the tram network to 27 kilometres from Broadbeach to Burleigh Heads.

In July 2017 the Queensland Government allocated $5 million towards developing Stage 3A’s business case. The detailed business case was developed by Building Queensland in partnership with the Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR). The case was finalised in December 2018 and presented to the Queensland Government for consideration.

The Federal Government committed $112 million towards Stage 3A in November 2018.

Key features:

  •  5 new trams
  • 8 stations
  • 16 to 17 minutes from Broadbeach South to Burleigh Heads
  • two traffic lanes either side of light rail tracks
  • dual track centre of the Gold Coast Highway
  • a light rail-bus interchange at Burleigh Heads

It will take around three years to build stage 3A with construction potentially starting in 2020.

Has the Project been successful?

Gold Coast Light Rail has proven to be a successful investment with 38 million passenger journeys since 2014 and almost 1 million passengers a month.

Further expansion of the network is considered with potential future lines to include:

  • Nobby Beach to Robina,
  • Broadbeach to Nerang,
  • Surfers to Bundall, and
  • Gold Coast University Hospital to Biggera Waters.
