Neville Bonner Pedestrian Bridge – South Bank

The Neville Bonner pedestrian bridge will be another connection point for foot traffic to cross the Brisbane River. The pedestrian bridge will connect at the new Queens Wharf precinct crossing over to South Bank where construction has now started, with the first section now in position.  A 40-metre, 43-tonne section of the bridge will be craned into place at the city end over the weekend.

Deputy Premier and Minister for State Development Steven Miles inspected woks today.

“Our world-best health response means more than 700 workers are working on the giant $3.6 billion Queen’s Wharf Brisbane project today.

“Where other parts of the world have slowed these types of projects, construction has continued on Queen’s Wharf throughout the COVID-19 pandemic.”

Mr Miles said the project was about 80 weeks away from opening late next year.

The Neville Bonner bridge will mostly support the accessibility to the long-awaited Queen’s Wharf project, which is expected to boost tourism and create thousands of jobs throughout the construction and once complete.

It is estimated that by this time next year more than 1500 workers will be on-site at Queen’s Wharf with the expectation that more than 8,000 workers will be employed across the complex.

Queen’s Wharf, along with infrastructure projects like Cross River Rail will transform South East Queensland.

“This week’s Budget includes the $3.34 billion Queensland Jobs Fund, which includes a new $350 million Industry Partnership Program to support job-creating industries and deliver cross-sectoral opportunities that unlock growth in multiple industries or supply chains and have a broad impact on the economy.

“Working with the private sector to deliver projects that create jobs is part of Queensland’s economic recovery plan,”said Mr Steven Miles

These are major critical works that will build a new lasting asset for the residents of Queensland. The construction of the Neville Bonner pedestrian bridge will be assembled in 13 sections of bridge decking of 320-metres. The first of the 13 sections have successfully been installed at South Bank to connect the already popular South Bank area to the up and coming Queen’s Wharf.

A 600-tonne crawler crane on a barge in the river will lift the 40-metre, 43-tonne bridge deck section from an adjacent barge and into place.

The Bridge will be named after Neville Thomas Bonner, who 50 years ago was chosen to fill a casual Senate vacancy making him the first Indigenous Australian to sit in the Australian Parliament.

“It’s great that we can acknowledge a historic Queenslander with the naming of the Neville Bonner Bridge that will connect Queen’s Wharf Brisbane and South Bank,” Mr Miles said.
