Survey Technician Job Description
Survey Technicians are responsible for using specialised equipment and tools to measure and collect data on land, property boundaries, and geographic features. They ensure accurate and precise data collection to help create detailed maps and plans that contribute to various land development projects.
Responsibilities
- Gather field data by conducting measurements, observations, and recordings of geographic features and topographical details
- Operate and maintain surveying instruments such as total stations, GPS receivers, and laser levels to accurately measure angles, and elevations
- Conduct surveys to map features of the land, including terrain, vegetation, buildings and utilities.
- Ensure accurate placement of infrastructure, and translate design plans and blueprints onto the field
- Utilise software to process and analyse collected information, and create diagrams, reports and maps
- Follow safety protocols when working outdoors and ensure the safety of other team members working on site
- Collaborate with surveyors, engineers, and other professionals to ensure that survey data aligns with project requirements
- Calibrate and adjust surveying instruments to maintain their accuracy and reliability during fieldwork
- Assess conditions, accessibility, and identify any potential challenges that may impact surveying operations
Requirements
- Tertiary qualification in Civil Engineering, Surveying or any other related fields
- Proven experience in surveying
- Problem-solving skills and attention to detail
- Good understanding/experience with modern survey instrumentation
- Profiency in using total stations, laser scanners, GPS equipment, and other related software tools
Working Conditions
- Travel may be required to worksites
- Work in both an indoor and outdoor environment
- Work in varying weather conditions
- Extra hours may be required when nearing the completion of a project
- Collaborative work with other professionals working on the projects
Average Salary
- $80k – $100k per year in Australia
- $75k – $85k per year in New Zealand
