EcologiQ is integrating and incorporating recycled waste materials across every Victoria’s Big Build road and rail infrastructure project possible.

EcologiQ is integrating recycled content across Victoria’s transport infrastructure projects and making the use of greener materials business-as-usual.

This initiative is using Victoria’s record infrastructure investment to be recognised as the world leader in the sustainable use of recycled and reused materials by 2025.

ecologiQ is the future of reusing, recycling and repurposing waste materials on road and rail infrastructure across Victoria.

The aim of this Victorian Government initiative is to integrate recycled and reused content into every corner of Victoria’s $100 billion Big Build by incorporating waste products wherever possible.

These efforts start with the Big Build, which is transforming how waste is used in construction and contributing to a circular economy.

ecologiQ comes at a pivotal time, given the Council of Australian Governments’ move in 2020 to ban the export of waste plastic, paper, tyres and glass. The Victorian Government’s ecologiQ program was created to find this waste a new home – as construction materials for transport projects.

The ecologiQ initiative was pioneered in 2019 by Major Road Projects Victoria’s CEO, Allen Garner, who drew the crucial connection between Victoria’s transport projects and the reform of Victoria’s recycling system.

ecologiQ supports the Recycled First Policy, which for the first time in Australian history, requires bidders on transport projects to optimise their use of reused and recycled materials.

Headlining ecologiQ’s push to accelerate change is the now annual Greener Infrastructure Conference which will bring together industry leaders with suppliers of recycled products and experts in circular economy.

The environmental burden of ripped-up asphalt is being significantly reduced due to the Craigieburn Road Upgrade.

The team at Major Road Projects Victoria and construction partner Fulton Hogan are using Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement (RAP). This is milled or excavated asphalt pavement collected during the rehabilitation of existing roads, which has been processed into an asphalt mix to create new asphalt.

Since works kicked off in 2021, the project has laid more 40,000 tonnes of asphalt, equating to around 14,000 tonnes of RAP.

EcologiQ Greener Infrastructure Conference

The three-day event at Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre will bring together leaders in government, sustainability and infrastructure to explore how to accelerate our shift to a greener future.

Veena Sahajwalla, Craig Reucassel and Romilly Madew will speak at the 2023 Green Infrastructure Conference this 18-20 September. They are leaders in championing change and will provide powerful perspectives on how we can work together to drive innovation and work towards a circular future.

Building on the sold out event held for the first time last year, the Conference presents a unique opportunity to learn how greener materials are being integrated into infrastructure and how collaboration and innovation can take it to the next level.
