Duplication of the Mandurah Estuary Bridge has reached another important milestone with a contract now awarded to Georgiou Group Pty Ltd to design and deliver the project.
Georgiou Group Pty Ltd were named as the preferred proponent in September.
The project will deliver significant improvements to congestion and safety in the Mandurah and Dawesville communities with a second, two-lane bridge constructed on the south side of the current Mandurah Estuary Bridge.
The project will also include construction of a new four-metre-wide shared path to improve connectivity and access to recreational activities for the local community.
More than 33,000 vehicles currently use the existing Mandurah Estuary Bridge every day, with congestion an ongoing issue.
“The Australian Government is committed to improving our road infrastructure and connecting and improving liveability for communities. The Mandurah Estuary Bridge will help ease ongoing congestion as well as deliver a safer, wider footpath, improving pedestrian safety,” says Federal Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government Minister Catherine King.
Construction is expected to start in early 2024, with site investigations getting underway before the end of the year.
“The Mandurah Estuary Bridge was built more than 40 years ago, but it was not designed to cater for the high volumes of traffic we see along this corridor today,” says Western Australian Transport Minister Rita Saffioti.
“The bridge is used by thousands of people every single day, but it has become a bottleneck for commuters travelling within the Mandurah and Dawesville communities,” says Western Australian Transport Minister Rita Saffioti.
“Duplicating the bridge will significantly ease the congestion currently experienced on approach to the bridge and cut the travel times for the thousands of commuters every single day,” says Western Australian Transport Minister Rita Saffioti.
Georgiou Group Pty Ltd has considerable experience in constructing bridges in Western Australia, including the design and construction of the award-winning Mandurah Traffic Bridge, which was completed in 2018.
“The bridge is used by more than 33,000 vehicles daily, but it has become a bottleneck for commuters travelling within the Mandurah and Dawesville communities,” says Senator for Western Australia Louise Pratt.
“I’m thrilled with the progress of the project and look forward to the improved commute for locals when the second bridge is complete,” says Senator for Western Australia Louise Pratt.
Georgiou Group Pty Ltd is also part of the Alliance currently delivering the new Fitzroy River Bridge.
Georgiou Group General Manager Simon Welfare explains, “Georgiou has demonstrated expertise in constructing bridges in Western Australia, including the design and construction of the award-winning Mandurah Traffic Bridge completed in 2018.”
“Building upon our strong portfolio of work with Mains Roads Western Australia, the design and construct contract will be delivered in collaboration with principal designer BG&E, and long-term marine works subcontractor, Brady Marine & Civil,” he said.
“We look forward to delivering this critical piece of infrastructure for the Western Australian State and local community.”
The project is jointly funded by the Australian and Western Australian Governments.
