Hydrographic Surveyor Job Description
A hydrographic surveyor measures and maps bodies of water, including seas, rivers, lakes, and oceans. They gather data on water depths, tides, currents, and underwater topography to support navigation safety, marine construction, dredging, and environmental monitoring.
Responsibilities
- Conduct surveys to determine water depths and underwater features using sonar, GPS, and other marine geophysical instruments
- Map seabed and shoreline profiles for navigational charts, marine construction, and coastal management projects
- Monitor and record tidal measurements and water current data
- Analyse and interpret hydrographic data to identify potential hazards
- Collaborate with maritime authorities and environmental agencies to ensure the accuracy of nautical charts and the protection of habitats
- Manage and maintain hydrographic survey equipment
- Prepare detailed reports and hydrographic maps that accurately represent aquatic environments for various stakeholders
- Advise on dredging operations and marine construction projects
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Hydrography, or any other related fields
- Strong understanding of oceanography, including tides, currents, and marine geology
- Analyse and interpret complex hydrographic data for mapping and reporting purposes
- Proficiency with hydrographic survey software and equipment
- Excellent communication skills for effective collaboration
- Physical fitness for work at sea, including the ability to handle challenging weather conditions and long periods on board survey vessels

Average Salary
- $90k – $110k per year in Australia
