Funding Boost for Gold Coast Light Rail Project

The Gold Coast Light Rail Project has been provided with an additional $126.6 million in funding from the Australian government to boost employment, investment and transport across the area for stage three of the project. This additional funding will help to ensure more Gold Coast commuters make it home sooner and safer.

With the financial boost for Stage three of the Gold Coast Light Rail Project, the Australian government has now committed a total of $395.6 million. This stage will deliver a 6.7km extension south of the existing tram network, linking Helensvale to Burleigh Heads and providing eight additional stations.

Stage three alone is expected to directly support 760 jobs while reducing local congestion and improving the current light rail system. The existing system will be extended by approximately 6.7 kilometres to the south, from Broadbeach to Burleigh Heads during stage three. The Gold Coast Light Rail project will also see the construction of eight new light rail stations, upgrades of pedestrian and cycling facilities, and bus and rail interchange.

Gold Coast Mayor Cr Tom Tate said: “This is a huge announcement for our city and underscores the benefits of all three tiers of government working together.”

“Light rail is our city’s public transport spine. Having this funding certainty also means we can continue our investigations into the vital east-west connections that will feed off the main light rail corridor. It’s a great day for our city.”

The Australian Government has committed $395.6 million, the Queensland Government $553.95 million and the City of Gold Coast $91.5 million to fund Gold Coast Light Rail.
