In July 2023, the age limit for UK applicants coming to New Zealand has gone up from 30 to 35 years old, and the maximum length of time they can stay and work in NZ is now extended to 3 years.
The Working Holiday visa for British citizens in New Zealand is known as the “Working Holiday Scheme Visa.” This visa allows young British adults to travel, work, and explore New Zealand for a temporary period.
Here are some key details about the Working Holiday Scheme Visa for British citizens:
- Eligibility: To be eligible for this visa, you typically need to be between 18 and 35 years old at the time of application and hold a valid British passport. It’s essential to check the specific eligibility criteria and requirements on the official New Zealand immigration website, as they may change.
- Duration: The Working Holiday Scheme Visa allows you to stay in New Zealand for up to 12, 23 or 36 months.
- Work and Travel: With this visa, you can work and travel throughout New Zealand. It allows you to take up temporary employment to fund your travels and experience life in the country.
- Multiple Entries: The visa typically allows multiple entries into New Zealand during its validity, so you can leave and re-enter the country as you explore the region.
- Health and Character Requirements: You may need to meet health and character requirements. You might be asked to provide medical certificates or police certificates as part of your application.
- Insurance: It’s highly recommended to have comprehensive travel and health insurance for the duration of your stay in New Zealand. This is not usually a formal requirement, but it’s essential for your well-being.
- Application Process: You will need to submit an online application through the official New Zealand immigration website. The application process may include providing various documents and paying the required visa fees. Current cost (Nov 2023 is NZD $420).
- Quota: There is a quota system in place, limiting the number of Working Holiday visas issued each year, so it’s advisable to apply as early as possible (current quota is 15,000 a year).
Things to note:
- You cannot accept a permanent job.
- If you apply for a 23-month or longer visa, you must provide a General Medical Certificate.
- If you choose a 12 or 23-month visa and decide you want to stay longer, you can apply later for the balance of the 36-month period. You will need to pay another application fee.
- You cannot bring children with you on a working holiday. If you have a partner who wants to come to New Zealand, they will need to apply for their own visa.
