More than one million passengers have jumped on board the new Sydney Metro City service running deep below the heart of Sydney since the new railway opened.

Sydney Metro is Australia’s biggest public transport project. By 2030, Sydney will have a network of 4 metro lines, 46 stations and 113 km of new metro rail.

The new section of the M1 Line from Chatswood to Sydenham opened on 19 August 2024, includes 15.5-kilometres of metro rail extending the existing Metro North West line from Chatswood, below the harbour and under the Sydney CBD, then out to Sydenham.

The landmark new line connecting Sydney’s northwest under the harbour for the first time, and below the CBD to Sydenham has received an overwhelmingly positive response from passengers.

Sydney Metro’s expanded Operations Control Centre (OCC) has been unveiled at the Sydney Metro Trains Facility in Tallawong.

Sydney’s new M1 Line includes:

  • A train every four minutes in the peak, seven minutes in the interpeak (gradually increasing over the first few months to ultimately achieve a train every five minutes during interpeak on weekdays) and every 10 minutes during off peak and on the weekends.
  • 445 services a day
  • Six fully accessible new stations at Crows Nest, Victoria Cross, Barangaroo, Martin Place, Gadigal and Waterloo, along with new platforms at Central and Sydenham.
  • Seamless interchange with multiple transport modes at all stations, with direct interchange with Sydney Trains services at Martin Place, Central and Sydenham
  • More than 900 bike storage spaces.
  • Uninterrupted network mobile coverage.
  • Each new station is equipped with platform screen door technology to keep people and objects safely away from tracks.
  • Safe journeys monitored by a state-of-the-art control centre, with approx. 100 CCTV cameras at every station and 38 cameras inside each train.

CIMIC companies to start operating new city section of Sydney Metro

CIMIC Group companies funded, designed, constructed, delivered and will operate the project:

  • Pacific Partnerships, as an equity partner in the Northwest Rapid Transit Consortium, and UGL as part of Metro Trains Sydney, will operate and maintain the metro from Tallawong to Sydenham, in total more than 50 kilometres of rail and 21 metro stations, including the section opened today
  • CPB Contractors, with partners, designed and constructed the project’s twin 15.5 kilometre tunnels and delivered associated civil works in the city section
  • CPB Contractors and UGL connected Sydney Metro City to the existing Metro North West Line, completing the mechanical and electrical fit-out of 31 kilometres of tunnels and six underground stations. These works were a continuation of CPB Contractors and UGL’s earlier construction of the Metro North West Line, which included twin 15 kilometre tunnels, 13 stations and 4000 new commuter car parking spaces
  • UGL delivered the project’s radio system and through its stake in Metro Trains Sydney, extending its existing services on the Metro North West Line.

CPB Contractors Managing Director Jason Spears said: “Alongside the engineering and construction excellence that brought these Sydney Metro projects to life, our team engaged more than 1,000 local businesses, including 1.2% Indigenous or social enterprises, employed a local workforce of more than 2000 people, and provided training to more than 10,000 workers across 31 different programs and certificates, leaving a lasting social and skills legacy for greater Sydney.”

UGL Managing Director Doug Moss said: “Through its stake in Metro Trains Sydney, UGL will operate and maintain Australia’s first fully automated rail system, from Tallawong to Sydenham. Passengers will be able to catch a metro service every four minutes in the peak. We are delighted to celebrate this milestone and build on the popularity of Metro North West, which has had more than 84 million customer journeys and 18 million kilometres travelled in five years.”

Pacific Partnerships Managing Director Simon Nicholls said: “This opening builds on successful operation of the new fully automated Metro North West Line – the first phase of the metro which opened in May 2019. The city section of the project will enable a seamless customer experience from Chatswood into the Sydney CBD and beyond to Bankstown by 2025.”
